Los Angeles: City of Breakfasts
One thing I quickly learned during my time in LA is that they have the BEST breakfast but the rest of their meals are kind of blah so you would do well to fill up early in the day and keep the hunger at bay until dinner. The one exception is In-n-Out which actually has some good burgers and excellent service. The line moves very quickly and the fries are also quite good. Although, It is a fast food place at the end of the day.
Breakfast
Oh my God! Just thinking about these breakfasts has ready to hop on a plane for 16 hours just to taste the deliciousness again. First up, Huckleberry, a cute little shop where its usually busy but relatively fast-moving. I had the Green Eggs and Ham, although they didn’t have a turkey alternative for the ham, they happily substituted for avocado and I loved it! I also ordered a side of croissant because their display just looked that scrumptious and I couldn’t resist. I would recommend this place to anybody who visits LAX.
Next, Blu Jam Café, I was hesitant to try this place as I heard about the super long lines but my friend finally convinced me that I had to go. Standing in line, I met the cutest Mom and Son combo who chatted with me the whole time and were just so pleasant and kind, I almost felt I was in the Midwest. The wait time passed quickly and pretty soon I found myself ordering the Crunchy French toast and Kamil’s Breakfast- a mix of eggs cheese and macaroni. Both were amazing but I would be more inclined to return for the French toast. The portions were huge so I would recommend ordering only one item.
Lunch & Dinner
As a fan of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, I was excited to learn that SUR was quite close to my hotel and that they had an open table for an early dinner. I ordered the calamari and a steak and neither of them was anything to write home about. The calamari was actually quite bad and the steak was merely ok. In addition, none of the show regulars were there although I will say that the staff is quite good looking in general. I walked the couple of blocks to Pump and I quickly regretted picking SUR for dinner as the atmosphere at Pump was way cooler and although I can’t tell you whether or not the food was any better, I would have loved to sit under one of their signature massive trees for a meal.
A bout of bad luck led me to having lunch at Villa Blanca as it was the only place open for a late lunch. Surprisingly, the food was a little better. I had the fish and chips and the Caprese Sticks, which are both on the pre-dinner menu. For the “classier” version of a Vanderpump restaurant, I was surprised that they had paper tablecloths. Overall, I was underwhelmed by all things Vanderpump.
If you are a Real Housewives of Beverly Hills fan, I highly recommend this Jezebel article by Kara Brown- I am not sure if reading it would have made me more or less likely to check the restaurants out myself, but it sure made me laugh.
