Eating in Koh Samui
Before I go anywhere, I like to know where to spend the most important part of day: dinnertime. Luckily, my travel buddies knew quite a few people who frequent Koh Samui, so we had plenty of options. The two most highly recommended were The Cliff, a stone's throw away from our hotel and Dining on the Rocks, located in the heart of the gorgeous Six Senses Resort Hotel.
I was extremely excited to try The Cliff as it came highly recommended and if you take a look at the photo above you'll realize that the view is half the appeal. Overlooking the ocean, complete with a rocky cliffside, the best moment of our visit was that a couple of photographers were trying to capture the waves when a billow came in and the young artist had to protect his precious camera with his body.
We ordered a bunch of different things including the calamari, which I was mortified to find out was not heavily coated in batter, until I took a bite of one and my taste buds tingled with joy! I would highly recommend ordering the dish if you visit. My friend had the honey mustard chicken which was pretty good and I had the steak which was really filling and quite good but nothing to write home about, although the side of mushrooms were really good- and this is coming from someone who usually sticks to meat and potatoes.
Tip: Beware of the mosquitos who will not be hindered by insect repellent and incense, do your best to make sure your skin is fully covered, but don't be surprised if you still get bit!
The next night we had massages at the Six Senses Spa (more to come on this in the next post) which got us really hungry and after making the trek to the resort, we decided to have dinner at Dinning on the Rocks. I had Tamarind Prawns for the first time in my life and I was sold- they were large, scrumptious and perfectly cooked. I have dreamed of these prawns and I will definitely go back if I ever have the chance. As I was in a Thai restaurant, I couldn't resist ordering the green curry and while it was a little spicier than I expected, this was my favorite meal in Koh Samui by far. The panoramic views were stunning but I didn't get any good shots as it was a little too dark by the time I got there.
I will say that the plating at just about every restaurant we went to was not quite as sophisticated as I expected but as far as taste, I was pleasantly surprised with how good everything tasted wherever we ate in Thailand.
Overall, if I had one meal in Koh Samui, I would pick Dining on the Rocks over The Cliff as good Thai food can be hard to come by in the UAE and I felt I was getting more bang for my buck. The one caveat is that the view at The Cliff us a smidgeon prettier than the one at the Six Senses Resort.
